Standing stone, Clonmoyle, Co. Cork

Some archaeological sites are remarkable for what survives.

This one is remarkable for what does not. A standing stone once existed at Clonmoyle in mid Cork, a county that contains hundreds of such prehistoric uprights, typically single blocks of undressed stone erected during the Bronze Age and thought to have served as territorial markers, ritual focal points, or commemorations of the dead. The Clonmoyle stone, however, left almost no trace behind, and what little documentary evidence exists tells a story less of ancient mystery than of quiet disappearance.

The stone does not appear on the Ordnance Survey six-inch maps of 1842 or 1903, which is itself an oddity. The nineteenth-century OS mapping of Ireland was generally thorough in recording standing stones, so its absence from both surveys suggests either that it had already been removed by the mid-1800s, or that it was overlooked, perhaps because it was already low-lying or partially buried. It surfaces only once in the cartographic record, marked on the 1938 OS six-inch map as a single standing stone. At some point after that, it was removed entirely, and the ground now holds no visible surface trace of it.

There is nothing to see at Clonmoyle today, which is precisely what makes the site worth a moment's thought. The 1938 map entry is the stone's only confirmed appearance in any record, a single notation that fixes it briefly in time before it vanishes again. Whether it was cleared for agriculture, incorporated into a wall, or simply toppled and buried is unrecorded. What remains is an absence with a very precise paper trail.
