Standing stone, Berrings, Co. Cork

Not every standing stone carries the weight of prehistory.

The one that once stood in a pasture near Berrings in mid Cork was, by the account of the researcher who recorded it, a cattle stone, erected by a local landowner's father as a practical marker in the field. At four and a half feet tall, it would have cut a modest figure against the landscape, easy to mistake for something far older if you did not know its origin. It has since been removed, leaving no trace in the grass.

What makes it worth noting is the particular confusion it represents. Because the stone does not appear on the Ordnance Survey six-inch maps of either 1842 or 1903, it was clearly put up sometime after the later of those surveys, placing its erection in the twentieth century at the earliest. A researcher identified as Hartnett (PJH) was the one who recorded it and obtained the explanation from those who knew the land. The designation "cattle stone" most likely refers to a rubbing post or field marker used in the management of livestock, the kind of thing a practical farmer might set upright without any thought of antiquity. Yet here it found its way into an archaeological inventory, logged alongside genuine prehistoric monuments, a reminder that the landscape is always accumulating new objects that time will eventually make ambiguous.
