Fulacht fia, Ardamadane, Co. Cork

In the marshy ground west of a stream at Ardamadane in County Cork, there is a place that was once used for cooking, or possibly bathing, or perhaps something else entirely, depending on which archaeologist you ask.

A fulacht fia is a type of prehistoric burnt mound, typically found near water, where stones were heated in a fire and then dropped into a water-filled trough to bring it to the boil. Thousands of them survive across Ireland, making them one of the most common prehistoric monument types on the island, and yet the details of their purpose remain genuinely contested. The one at Ardamadane is, in a sense, even more elusive than most.

By 1937, when the six-inch Ordnance Survey map was drawn, the site appeared as a simple mound. That was the last clear record of it for some time. When investigators later tried to locate it on the ground, heavy overgrowth had made that impossible. The mound had effectively disappeared back into the landscape. Archaeological test-trenching eventually confirmed that something was there, though what remained was badly disturbed, the physical structure of the fulacht fia having been significantly broken up or degraded over time. The confirmation came through personal communication from a D. Sutton, and the finding was incorporated into the published Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.

What makes this particular site quietly telling is the gap between map and ground. The 1937 record shows something visible enough to be marked; decades later, even trained investigators could not find it among the vegetation. The remains that test-trenching uncovered were described as badly disturbed, meaning that even the archaeology itself has been compromised. It is a site that exists most clearly on paper, its physical presence reduced to traces in trenches rather than anything a visitor could stand before and read.
