Burnt mound, Crushyriree, Co. Cork

In a tillage field at Crushyriree in County Cork, a low oval spread of cracked and blackened stones sits at the edge of a northeast-facing slope, looking for all the world like a patch of disturbed ground.

What it actually represents is a fulacht fiadh, the most common prehistoric monument type in Ireland, and one whose purpose archaeologists have debated for generations. The leading theory holds that these mounds accumulated over repeated episodes of heating stones in fire and plunging them into a water-filled trough to boil or cook, though proposals ranging from textile dyeing to communal bathing have all been aired.

The mound at Crushyriree measures roughly 13 metres east to west and 10 metres north to south, an oval accumulation of heat-shattered stone and charcoal-enriched soil that speaks to sustained, repeated use over time. Extending some 8 metres to the west is a separate spread of grey soil laced with patches of red clay, suggesting either an associated working area or a related episode of activity. Notably, a second possible burnt mound lies approximately 160 metres to the west-northwest, hinting that this stretch of sloping ground was a place people returned to. The clustering of such sites is not unusual; burnt mounds are often found in proximity to one another, perhaps sharing access to a watercourse or simply marking landscapes that were consistently favoured in the Bronze Age.
