Fulacht fia, Currahaly, Co. Cork

Scattered across the Irish countryside, often in boggy or low-lying ground, fulachta fiadh are among the most numerous and least-explained monument types in the country.

The example at Currahaly in County Cork sits in marshy ground, a partially overgrown circular mound of burnt and heat-shattered stone measuring roughly 7.8 metres long, 4 metres wide, and 0.7 metres high. A fulacht fia, for those unfamiliar with the term, is essentially the debris left behind by a prehistoric cooking or heating site, typically a horseshoe-shaped or oval mound of fire-cracked stone that accumulated around a water-filled trough. The stones would be heated in a fire and then dropped into the trough to boil water, and the cracked, spent material was simply discarded to the side, building up over repeated use into the low mound that survives today.

What sets the Currahaly site apart from the thousands of isolated examples elsewhere is that it belongs to a cluster of five fulachta fiadh in close proximity to one another. Such groupings are not unknown in the archaeological record, but they remain notable; they suggest repeated, possibly organised activity in a particular area over an extended period, rather than a single episode of use. The monument type is generally assigned to the Bronze Age, though the precise function of fulachta fiadh continues to be debated, with proposals ranging from communal food preparation and hunting camps to bathing and textile production. The Currahaly mound itself is partially overgrown, as many such sites are, making the low rise in the landscape easy to overlook without knowing what to look for.
