This is a fulacht fia, a type of prehistoric cooking site found in enormous numbers across Ireland, typically consisting of a trough that would have been filled with water and heated by dropping in stones made red-hot in an adjacent fire. The burnt and shattered stones were then discarded into a mound, which is what survives. What makes this particular example quietly notable is its proximity to another of its kind: a second fulacht fia lies roughly fifty metres to the north-east, suggesting that this corner of mid Cork saw repeated, perhaps even concurrent, use over generations.

Fulachtaí fia, as they are known collectively, date in most cases to the Bronze Age, though some have yielded earlier or later material. They are among the most common archaeological monument types in Ireland, yet their precise social function remains debated. Cooking is the dominant theory, but brewing, textile processing, and bathing have all been proposed. The Ardrum example sits in tillage land, which means it has been subject to the pressures of repeated ploughing, and its current dimensions, ten metres on the north-east to south-west axis and eight metres on the north-west to south-east, likely reflect some degree of truncation from its original spread. The pairing of two such sites within fifty metres of each other is a detail worth pausing over: whether they represent two households, two periods of activity, or simply a well-used landscape, the land at Ardrum was clearly drawing people back long before anyone thought to record it.
