Mill – fulling, Curraclogh, Co. Cork

At Curraclogh in County Cork, a fulling mill once stood as a small but significant node in the textile economy of rural Ireland.

Fulling mills were used to finish woven woollen cloth, pounding it with heavy wooden hammers driven by a waterwheel to clean, thicken, and felt the fibres. The process transformed raw, loosely woven fabric into the dense, weatherproof material that was essential to everyday life, and the presence of such a mill in this part of Cork points to a local wool trade that has largely faded from memory.
