Cross – Market cross, Townparks, Co. Cork

Some places make it onto the archaeological record precisely because they have disappeared.

In the centre of Cloyne, on the north side of Rock Street, there once stood a large wooden cross that served as the town's market cross, the kind of structure that historically marked the civic and commercial heart of an Irish settlement, a fixed point around which trade was licensed and community life organised. Nothing of it remains today, not a fragment, not a socket stone, not even a depression in the ground that might betray where it once stood.
