Standing stone, Tullagh By.), Co. Cork

A single upright stone in a pasture field in West Cork is an easy thing to walk past without a second thought.

This one, in the townland of Tullagh in County Cork, is worth pausing at. It stands 1.45 metres high and is described as subrectangular, meaning it has been at least roughly shaped or selected for its flat-faced, broadly rectangular form rather than being a wholly natural outcrop left in place. It is oriented along a NNE-SSW axis, a deliberate alignment that is common among prehistoric standing stones and has prompted much debate about whether such orientations track astronomical events, mark territorial boundaries, or served some other purpose entirely.

The stone is set into a south-west-facing slope, which places it in a landscape typical of West Cork's prehistoric activity. Standing stones of this kind are generally associated with the Bronze Age, roughly 2500 to 500 BC, though pinning an individual example to a specific period or function without excavation is rarely possible. What is recorded here is modest but precise: a stone measuring 1.10 metres across its face and just 0.27 metres deep, giving it a noticeably thin, blade-like profile when seen from the side. That thinness, combined with its height, would have made it a visible marker in an open pastoral landscape much like the one it still occupies today.
