Standing stone – pair, Cahermeeleboe, Co. Cork

Some archaeological sites ask you to look carefully.

This one asks you to look for something that is no longer there at all. On a west-facing slope of rough hill pasture above Ballydonegan Bay in County Cork, a pair of standing stones once occupied a small enclosed corner of a field. They are gone now, toppled during digging in the area at some point before the site was formally recorded, and the ground where they stood has since been colonised by gorse and disturbed by rabbit burrowing. What remains is essentially a location, a set of local memories, and a reasonable inference.

Standing stone pairs are a recognised prehistoric monument type found across Ireland, typically consisting of two upright stones set close together, though their precise purpose remains a matter of debate among archaeologists. They are generally thought to date to the Bronze Age. The stones at Cahermeeleboe are known only through local accounts passed on to recorders, who noted that two upright stones had stood in the northeast corner of the field before they fell. The description was judged consistent with a standing stone pair, though the conditional language in the record is deliberate: without the stones in place, certainty is impossible. The site was documented in the Archaeological Inventory of County Cork, Volume 5, published in 2009.

The slope itself still overlooks Ballydonegan Bay, and that view to the northwest would have been the same view the stones commanded, whenever they were raised and by whoever raised them. Whether that orientation was deliberate is another question the missing stones cannot answer.
