Church, Darrary, Co. Cork

In the townland of Darrary in County Cork, a church stands on the archaeological record without, for the moment, much else to accompany it.

The site is listed as a monument, formally recognised and mapped, yet the details that would normally fill out its story, its age, its dedication, its current condition, remain unavailable in the public record. That absence is itself a kind of curiosity. Ireland has thousands of ruined or vanished churches, many of them medieval, some earlier, and a great number survive only as low stone footprints in fields, their identities half-recovered and their histories still being pieced together. Darrary's church is, for now, one of those.
