Graveyard, Gortnaclohy, Co. Cork

What is most striking about the graveyard at Gortnaclohy is not its age or its setting, but its silence on the matter of the dead.

The majority of those buried here are marked by uninscribed grave markers, plain stones that record a presence without offering a name, a date, or any other detail the living might use to identify who lies beneath. It is a quality found in many older Irish burial grounds, where poverty, convention, or the priorities of a community that held its knowledge collectively meant that formal inscription was never the point. Yet this ground is still in use, which gives it an unusual dual character: a working graveyard where the modern and the anonymous exist side by side.
