Anomalous stone group, Tooreennasillane, Co. Cork

Within a disused burial ground in Tooreennasillane, West Cork, two upright stones stand in quiet proximity to one another, classified simply as "anomalous", a label that says more than it might appear to.

The word is used when a stone setting cannot be confidently assigned to any recognised monument type, neither a stone pair, a standing stone in the conventional sense, nor part of a stone row or circle. Something about these two slabs resists easy categorisation, and that uncertainty is part of what makes them worth attention.

The two stones are rectangular in plan, their long axes oriented roughly northwest to southeast, and they sit 1.8 metres apart. The taller of the pair, positioned to the southwest, reaches 1.8 metres in height and is notably thin, measuring 0.9 metres by just 0.1 metres at its base. The second stone is slightly shorter at 1.6 metres and considerably broader, at 0.7 metres by 0.5 metres, and it leans heavily to the southwest. Their location in the western half of a disused burial ground adds another layer of ambiguity. Prehistoric standing stones are sometimes absorbed into later Christian burial grounds, their original purpose long forgotten, their presence tolerated or perhaps deliberately preserved. Whether that is the case here is unknown, but the combination of unclassified standing stones and a long-abandoned graveyard gives the site an atmosphere that is genuinely difficult to read.
