Hut site, Garranes, Co. Cork

On a north-east-facing hillslope at Garranes in County Cork, a small circular stone structure sits partly submerged in shallow bog, its walls protruding just enough above the ground to betray its presence.

The hut site measures roughly 3.4 metres in diameter, with a stone wall surviving to a thickness of around 0.6 metres and a height of about 0.3 metres, running east to west-northwest before fading into intermittent traces. The interior, despite the boggy surrounds, remains level, a detail that hints at the care once taken in its construction.

Hut sites of this kind are among the more modest survivals in the Irish archaeological landscape. Typically associated with seasonal or pastoral activity, they were used by people working the uplands, perhaps tending livestock during summer months in a practice known as booleying, the transhumance tradition of moving animals to higher ground. No excavation or detailed dating appears to have been carried out here, so it is not possible to say with certainty when this particular structure was in use. What is notable, however, is that a second hut site lies approximately seven metres to the south-west, suggesting this was not a solitary shelter but part of a small cluster of activity on the hillside, two structures close enough to have served people working in concert.
