That uncertainty is itself the most interesting thing about this particular site. A ringfort, to give a quick description, is a circular enclosure defined by earthen banks or stone walls, used in early medieval Ireland as a farmstead or place of habitation. They number in the thousands across Ireland and are among the most commonly recorded monument types in the country. What makes this one unusual is not what it is, but what almost nothing is known about it, and that it vanished before the record could catch up with it.

The area of Burgage More once occupied a neck of land enclosed on three sides by the River Liffey, before the valley was flooded to create the Poulaphouca Reservoir in the 1940s. The ringfort does not appear on any edition of the Ordnance Survey maps, and no aerial photographs have captured it. The sole thread of evidence leads back to an unnamed member of staff at the National Museum of Ireland, who apparently noted the site during fieldwork carried out before the flooding. No further documentation seems to have followed. The result is a monument recorded on the strength of a single, unverified observation, made by someone whose name has not survived the account, describing a place that no longer exists above water.

There is something fitting about a ringfort known only through an offhand remark made in the field, for a landscape that was about to disappear entirely. The reservoir now covers the site, and short of a significant drop in water levels, nothing here is accessible or visible. The record stands as a kind of placeholder, acknowledging that something may have been lost without being able to say quite what.
