There are at least three confirmed examples here, possibly four, of a type of prehistoric cooking site known in Irish as a fulacht fia. The basic principle was straightforward: dig or find a trough near a water source, heat stones in a fire, drop the stones into the water to bring it to a boil, and use it to cook meat. The shattered, fire-cracked stones, discarded after use, accumulated over time into the distinctive horseshoe-shaped or oval mounds that survive in their thousands across the Irish landscape. What makes Sraghmore notable is the concentration of sites in a single wet, spring-fed location, which would have made it an ideal and perhaps repeatedly used spot over many generations.

The mounds vary considerably in size. The largest is roughly oval, measuring around thirteen metres east to west and fourteen metres north to south, and still rises to about 0.8 metres above the surrounding ground. A second mound, lying slightly downhill to the east, is more circular in plan and a little lower. A third, positioned close to the south-western edge of the second, is much smaller, only four to five metres across and barely 0.2 metres high, with a hollow visible at its eastern side, possibly the ghost of the original trough. A fourth possible mound, adjacent to a nearby stream, is similarly modest in scale. The presence of multiple fulachta fiadh in close proximity, rather than a single isolated example, is not unheard of in areas with reliable water sources, but it is far from commonplace.
