Bullaun stone, Crehelp, Co. Wicklow

In Crehelp, County Wicklow, there is a field known locally as the Churchyard Field, and until some point after 1931 it contained a bullaun stone, a type of ancient stone with one or more hollowed basins ground into its surface.

Bullauns are found across Ireland, most often near early Christian sites, and their precise function remains a matter of quiet scholarly debate; theories range from grinding grain or pigments to use in ritual or healing practices. What makes this particular example distinctive is that it no longer exists in its recorded location. It has been removed, leaving behind only a description and a field name that hints at a deeper, now-obscured history.

The stone was documented in 1931 by Walshe, who recorded a granite block measuring roughly 0.86 metres by 0.43 metres, with a circular basin approximately 0.25 metres in diameter ground close to one edge. The basin varied in depth from around eight to nineteen centimetres, suggesting it had seen considerable use over time. At the time of recording, the stone sat on a small, irregular platform within the Churchyard Field, though even then this platform was not visible at ground level. The name of the field points to ecclesiastical associations common with bullaun sites, where such stones frequently occur near early medieval churches or enclosures, though no standing structure survives here to confirm that connection directly.

For anyone who visits the area today, there is nothing to see at the spot itself. The platform described by Walshe is buried, the stone is gone, and the field gives no outward sign of what it once held. The interest lies less in any physical encounter and more in the fact that a documented piece of early medieval material culture simply vanished between one generation and the next, its whereabouts unrecorded.
