Holy Sites & Wells
In the townland of Ratheskin in County Mayo, there is a holy well dedicated to St Brigid, known locally as Brides Well.
Holy wells of this kind are among the oldest continuously venerated sites in Ireland, their origins often pre-dating Christianity even as they were absorbed into the calendar of saints and pattern days. The association with Brigid, whose feast falls on the first of February, is particularly widespread across the country, and wells bearing her name were typically visited on that day or during the weeks surrounding it, with offerings left and rounds, or ritual circuits of the site, walked in prayer.
Beyond its name and location, the specific history of this particular well remains difficult to trace in detail. What can be said is that holy wells in Mayo were rarely isolated features. They were often surrounded by a small enclosure, marked by a standing stone or a clootie tree, the branches of which would be hung with strips of cloth left by those seeking cures or intercession. The ritual life of such places was largely oral and communal, passed between generations rather than recorded in documents, which is part of why so many of them remain only faintly visible in the historical record even when they survive physically on the ground.
