On the Iveragh Peninsula in County Kerry, near the townland of Keel, there sits a cairn, one of those ancient stone mounds whose origins and purpose the landscape refuses to give up easily.
Cairns of this type are among the oldest human-made structures in Ireland, typically built as burial monuments or territorial markers during the Neolithic or Bronze Age periods, constructed by piling loose stone over a grave or chamber beneath. That this one exists is clear enough. What it contains, who raised it, and precisely when, remain questions without easy answers.
