The mound sits on a gentle north-facing slope, its flat summit measuring approximately 14.4 metres from east-northeast to west-southwest and 12 metres from north-northwest to south-southeast. At its base, the structure spans roughly 22.5 metres at its widest point, rising between 2 and 2.6 metres above the natural ground level. Today, grass covers the entire earthwork, softening its contours and giving it an almost natural appearance.

This type of fortification represents one of the earliest forms of Norman castle building in Ireland, typically dating from the late 12th or early 13th century. Motte castles consisted of a raised earthen mound topped with a wooden palisade and tower, serving as both defensive strongholds and symbols of Norman authority in newly conquered territories. The Milltown example shows traces of what may have been a fosse, or defensive ditch, along its southwest to western side; a common feature that would have made the steep sides of the motte even more difficult for attackers to scale.

The site forms part of County Meath's rich medieval landscape, where Norman settlers established numerous fortifications to control key territories and routes. Though the wooden structures that once crowned the motte have long since vanished, the earthwork itself remains as a tangible link to this turbulent period of Irish history, when new lords imposed their authority through a network of castles and fortified settlements across the countryside.
