It sits within a rectangular walled graveyard on a south-facing slope that drops toward the northern bank of a small stream. That a graveyard persists while almost nothing of the church itself remains is not unusual in rural Ireland, but what makes this site quietly interesting is how precisely we can date the moment of its disappearance. By 1838 the building was already described as ruinous, meaning its decline came with some speed.

The 1835 edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map, one of the most detailed cartographic records of pre-Famine Ireland, shows the church as a T-shaped structure, a plan that typically indicates a nave with a transept or side projection added to accommodate a growing congregation. A note recorded by Gallogly in 1993 to 1994 describes it as a thatched chapel measuring approximately 53 feet by 24 feet and standing only 8 feet high, which works out to roughly 16 metres long, 7 metres wide, and a little over 2.5 metres to the eaves. Thatched Catholic chapels of this modest scale were common across Ireland in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, particularly in areas where Catholic communities had limited resources and operated under the residual restrictions of the Penal era. That this one was recorded as ruinous just three years after the OS surveyors mapped it suggests it may have been replaced by a more substantial building elsewhere, or simply abandoned as its congregation shifted. There is no evidence, and no suggestion in the archaeological record, of any earlier structure on the site.
