Churches & Chapels
In the townland of Cullin in County Mayo, a church sits on the archaeological record with almost nothing attached to its name.
It has been noted, catalogued, and assigned a monument number, yet the details that would normally accompany such a listing, its age, its dedication, the community that built and used it, remain effectively inaccessible to the casual researcher. That absence is itself a kind of curiosity. Mayo is a county dense with early medieval ecclesiastical remains, ruined nave-and-chancel churches, and the remnants of pre-Norman foundation sites, and Cullin's church belongs, at least formally, to that broader landscape of sacred architecture, even if its particulars have not yet surfaced into public view.
