Church, Shanbally, Co. Waterford

On a low-lying plateau near Shanbally in County Waterford, a roughly rectangular patch of grass marks what local tradition has long held to be a church site. There are no standing walls, no carved stonework, no obvious sign of what once stood here. What remains is a faint geometry in the ground: a grass-covered area measuring approximately 37 metres by 25 metres, its outline traced by low scarps no more than half a metre high, with a broader, spread-out bank along the north-east edge. The landscape holds the shape of something, though it refuses to say precisely what.

The site's identity rests largely on local belief rather than excavated evidence, which gives it a quietly uncertain character. The one object that might have helped settle the question, a bullaun stone, has effectively been lost to view. Bullaun stones are boulders or slabs bearing one or more rounded depressions, likely worn or carved by human hands, and are frequently associated with early Christian ecclesiastical sites across Ireland, sometimes linked to ritual or healing practices. This particular example sits against a nearby field bank, but has been covered over by spoil and is no longer visible. Without it, and without any standing fabric to examine, the site remains officially classified as a probable church, caught between oral memory and inconclusive physical evidence.
