Cross, Slievemore, Co. Mayo

On the southern slope of Slievemore, the great quartzite mountain that dominates the northern end of Achill Island, there is a cross.

Beyond its classification as a monument and its location on one of the more dramatically situated landscapes in the west of Ireland, the documentary record for it is, for now, essentially silent. That silence is itself worth noting. Slievemore is a mountain layered with human presence, from megalithic tombs near its base to the famous deserted village of stone-walled cottages that stretches along its lower flanks, abandoned during and after the Famine years of the 1840s. A cross somewhere on that slope, unelaborated in any currently available record, belongs to a landscape where Christianity, pre-Christian tradition, and nineteenth-century catastrophe have all left marks close together.

Achill's Slievemore has long drawn archaeological attention precisely because so many periods of activity are compressed into a relatively small area. The deserted village, known locally as the Fahy or the old village, preserves the footprints of perhaps eighty or more stone cottages, and evidence suggests some of the settlement patterns there are considerably older than the Famine-era abandonment. Crosses in such landscapes can be difficult to date with confidence; they range from early medieval incised stone markers to much later folk or devotional carvings erected at sites of local religious significance. Without further detail it is not possible to say which tradition this particular cross belongs to, or what form it takes, whether a free-standing stone, a cut slab, or something incised into an existing rock face.
