Earthwork, Rathmeel, Co. Mayo

On a low rise above a narrow stream valley in County Mayo, there sits an earthwork so modest it might easily be mistaken for a natural unevenness in the pasture.

The platform is D-shaped, roughly seven metres east to west and four and a half metres north to south, rising only twenty to thirty centimetres above the surrounding ground. A slightly raised rim, incorporating a few stones, traces the curving northern edge, while the straight southern side has been cut away by more recent disturbance. What it originally was, nobody can say with certainty.

The feature appears on the 1837 Ordnance Survey six-inch map as a small circular enclosure, and again on the 1930 edition as a roughly circular hachured feature of around ten metres in diameter, the hatching a cartographic convention indicating raised ground. The change in outline between those two surveys, from circular to the D-shape visible today, hints at gradual erosion or interference over those intervening decades. Local knowledge adds a small, specific detail from within living memory: an area of disturbed ground immediately to the south-east was used during the 1940s as a retting pond, a shallow pool for soaking flax stems to loosen their fibres before processing. That pond has since been partly infilled, leaving only uneven ground beside the spring well, now housed in concrete, that still rises nearby.
