No bank, no ditch, no trace of a boundary breaks the surface of the grass. Whatever once defined this place has been absorbed so completely into the land that a person walking across it would have no idea they were standing inside what was once a deliberately enclosed space.

The enclosure does appear, however, on paper. The Ordnance Survey mapped it in 1839, noting a small circular embanked enclosure with an external diameter of roughly 25 metres. By the time the next edition appeared in 1924, the recorded dimensions had grown to somewhere between 35 and 40 metres across, a discrepancy that likely reflects improved surveying rather than any physical change to the site. An embanked enclosure of this kind, a roughly circular area defined by a raised earthen bank, is a form found widely across Ireland and can date anywhere from the prehistoric period through to the early medieval. They served various purposes, from settlement and farming to ritual use, and without excavation it is rarely possible to say which function applied in any given case. At Ballyfin, even that bank is now gone from view, leaving the site defined only by its position and its cartographic history.
