Enclosure, Cloonmore, Co. Kerry

In the townland of Cloonmore, in County Kerry, there is a structure recorded simply as an enclosure.

The classification itself tells a particular kind of story. In Irish archaeology, an enclosure can mean almost anything bounded by a bank, ditch, wall, or combination of all three: a ringfort that has lost its definition over centuries of ploughing and weather, a monastic precinct reduced to a faint ridge, or a field system whose original purpose has become unreadable in the landscape. The fact that it warrants a record at all suggests something survives, or survived long enough to be noted, even if the details have not yet been made widely available.

Cloonmore is a quiet Kerry townland, and without further detail in the surviving record it is difficult to say more about this particular enclosure with any confidence. What can be said is that Kerry's landscape holds an extraordinary density of such features, many of them the remains of early medieval settlement. A ringfort, known in Irish as a ráth or lios depending on its construction, was typically a farmstead of the period roughly between the fifth and twelfth centuries, enclosed for the protection of livestock and family. Many hundreds survive across the county in varying states of preservation, some dramatically upstanding, others barely distinguishable from natural undulations in a field. Without more specific information it would be speculation to say which category this one belongs to, or whether it predates the early medieval period entirely.
