Walk the ground and there is nothing to find, no ridge, no furrow, no trace of a boundary. The only evidence that people once divided and worked this land survives in aerial photographs, where the geometry of old enclosures shows up as crop marks or soil variations invisible to anyone standing at eye level. It is a peculiar category of archaeological site, present in the record but effectively absent from the landscape.
