Fort, Corduff, Co. Monaghan

On the crest of a drumlin ridge in County Monaghan, an oval earthwork sits quietly in grass and scrub, its outline still legible after more than a thousand years.

This is a rath, the most common type of enclosed settlement in early medieval Ireland, typically consisting of a circular or oval area ringed by one or more earthen banks and a fosse, the outer ditch that was dug to raise the bank material and add another layer of defence. The Corduff example measures roughly 48 metres along its longer axis and about 37 metres across, with a bank that still stands between two and two and a half metres high on its outer face. A wide entrance gap, nearly four metres across at its base, opens to the north-north-east.

The site has been recorded on maps for at least two centuries. McCrea's map of County Monaghan, drawn in 1793, already marks it as an earthwork, and it appears again on the Ordnance Survey six-inch editions of 1834 and 1907, suggesting it was sufficiently visible and well-defined to catch a cartographer's attention across multiple generations of survey work. The drumlin ridge it occupies runs roughly west-north-west to east-south-east, and the rath's position on the summit would have given its inhabitants both a commanding view of the surrounding landscape and a naturally elevated, well-drained platform. Where the bank crosses the ridge, much of it has been reduced to a low scarp reinforced by a hedge, but the fosse on the southern and west-north-western sides remains traceable as a band of unusually lush vegetation, the kind of differential growth that often betrays buried or disturbed ground to a careful eye.
