Fort, Drumrutagh, Co. Monaghan

On the 1834 edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map, a circular enclosure in Drumrutagh is marked in gothic lettering as a "fort", the script style typically reserved for antiquities of presumed archaeological significance.

Today, standing in the same pasture field on a low rise in an otherwise flat landscape, there is nothing to see at ground level. No earthwork, no visible bank, no trace of whatever once prompted the cartographers to reach for their most solemn typeface.

The enclosure, roughly thirty metres in external diameter, belongs to a category of circular embanked features found across Ireland that are commonly referred to as ringforts, the remains of enclosed farmsteads dating broadly from the early medieval period. What makes Drumrutagh a slightly odd case is the proximity of Bessmount House, situated about three hundred metres to the south and in direct line of sight from the rise. This detail raises the possibility that what the Ordnance Survey recorded was not a genuinely ancient fort at all, but a tree-ring, a planted circle of trees used as a decorative or sheltering feature on a country estate, or perhaps an older earthwork that was adapted for that purpose. Estate owners in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries frequently tidied, planted, or otherwise reshaped older landscape features to suit the aesthetics of the demesne, and the distinction between a repurposed ringfort and an ornamental planting was not always one that map-makers paused to investigate.
