Fort, Dunmaurice, Co. Monaghan

On the crest of a drumlin ridge in County Monaghan, aligned roughly west-northwest to east-southeast, a circular earthwork sits largely swallowed by vegetation.

It is roughly 25 metres across, defined by an overgrown earthen bank that survives best on its northern and eastern sides, where it still rises to just over a metre in height. Elsewhere it has eroded to little more than a scarp, a gentle slope that only a careful eye would distinguish from the natural contour of the hill. The entrance, about two metres wide, opens toward the east-southeast, a common orientation for enclosures of this type.

This kind of circular earthen enclosure is generally understood as a ringfort, the most numerous class of archaeological monument in Ireland, built and occupied mainly between the early medieval period and around the twelfth century. They served as enclosed farmsteads, the bank and any accompanying ditch, or fosse, providing a degree of security for a household and its livestock. At Dunmaurice, no fosse is visible, though an earth and stone field bank sits at the base of the outer scarp, which may reflect later agricultural activity reshaping older ground. Inside the enclosure, two depressions reward attention. One, a D-shaped hollow near the southwest, is thought to be a quarry. The other, a rectangular cutting near the south that extends through the bank and has a spur running inward on its western side, is more ambiguous. Its dimensions and shape raise the possibility that it represents a destroyed souterrain, an underground passage or chamber typically built from stone and used for storage or refuge, though the absence of any visible stonework means this remains uncertain.
