Fort, Garran Otra, Co. Monaghan

On the 1834 edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map, a small circular enclosure is marked in gothic lettering as a 'fort' on the southern slope of a drumlin ridge near Garran Otra in County Monaghan.

Gothic lettering on these early OS maps was the cartographers' convention for antiquities, a visual signal to the reader that something old and noteworthy occupied that spot. The enclosure, roughly 25 metres in external diameter, sits just south-west of what were then a cluster of houses. It is the kind of modest earthwork, a low bank defining a roughly circular space, that appears in considerable numbers across Ulster's drumlin landscape, where such features are commonly associated with early medieval settlement or land division.

The difficulty is that the fort no longer appears to exist, at least not in any visible form. Where the map places it, just south-west of an abandoned farmyard, there is nothing to see. Whether the earthwork was levelled by agricultural improvement, eroded over the intervening century and a half, or whether the 1834 mapping itself recorded something already faint or uncertain, is not known. It survives only as an ink mark on an old map, described once and not confirmed since. Drumlin ridges in Monaghan were heavily worked over the centuries, and low earthworks of this kind were vulnerable to even routine land clearance. The site's position towards the base of a north-north-west to south-south-east ridge, on its south-facing aspect, would have made it reasonably sheltered and agriculturally attractive ground.
