Fort, Liskenna, Co. Monaghan

Someone has been growing vegetables, or flowers, or perhaps just keeping the lawn tidy, inside an early medieval ringfort for long enough that it now simply looks like the garden.

At Liskenna in County Monaghan, a subcircular enclosure measuring roughly 35 metres north to south and 28 metres east to west sits on a prominent rise, its interior flat and grassed over, pressed into domestic service while the earthen bank that once defined it has gradually worn down to a scarp. Ringforts, the enclosed farmsteads of early medieval Ireland, were typically defined by one or more raised banks and ditches; here, the surviving scarp still reaches between 1.2 and 1.8 metres on the east and west sides, and climbs considerably higher, between 2.3 and 3.8 metres, along the south, west, and northern stretch where a farm lane runs close against the perimeter.

The farmhouse that now stands about 20 metres to the north is connected to the fort's interior by steps leading up through a modern entrance cut into the northern side. The original way in was almost certainly elsewhere; the perimeter is at its lowest on the east-south-east, and that gentle depression is the most likely candidate for the ancient threshold. Farm buildings now press in from the north, east, and south, so the monument sits within a working agricultural complex rather than open countryside, the old enclosure absorbed so thoroughly into the farm's layout that the two histories have become difficult to separate at a glance.
