Ringforts

Fort, Moneen, Co. Leitrim

On a gentle north-westerly slope at Moneen in County Leitrim, a circular enclosure sits quietly beneath decades of vegetation, its original entrance completely lost.

What remains is a spread of stone roughly three and a half metres wide and less than half a metre high, with facing-stones breaking through the growth at intervals, tracing out a ring about eighteen and a half metres across its interior. It is the kind of place that reads as a slight thickening of the ground until you are standing on it and the logic of the circle becomes apparent.

Structures of this type are generally understood as ringforts, the most common field monument in Ireland, built and used across a long span from the early medieval period onward. A ringfort, at its simplest, is a roughly circular enclosure defined by an earthen bank or a stone wall, the latter variant often called a cashel or caher. They served as enclosed farmsteads, protecting a household and its livestock rather than functioning as military fortifications in any modern sense. The Moneen example, built in stone, belongs to that cashel tradition. The spread and modest height of the surviving material suggest the wall has slumped and dispersed considerably over time, and without an identifiable entrance it is difficult to say much more about the original layout or phasing of the structure.
