Fort, Toome, Co. Monaghan

A roughly oval patch of grass on a County Monaghan ridge might not announce itself as anything out of the ordinary, yet the ground itself tells a different story.

What survives here is a subcircular enclosure, approximately 39 metres along its north-west to south-east axis and 35 metres across, its edge still readable in places as a scarp, a low earthen slope that drops about 1.1 metres on the east-north-east side. This kind of earthwork is typical of the ringforts that were built across Ireland during the early medieval period, roughly between the fifth and twelfth centuries, and served as enclosed farmsteads or defensible residences for local families and their livestock. The perimeter on the western, northern, and eastern sides had already been lost by 1995, leaving only fragments of the original form.

The site sits just north-west of the summit of a ridge running north-west to south-east, with a higher parallel ridge lying around 130 metres to the north-east. To the south, the enclosure overlooks Toome Lough, also known as Crinkill Lough. That combination of elevated ground and a water view would have been a practical consideration for whoever built and used the site, offering both visibility across the surrounding landscape and proximity to a freshwater source. No original entrance has been identified in what remains, so the full layout of the enclosure, including how people and animals moved in and out, is no longer legible on the ground.
