Fulacht fia, Coan, Co. Kilkenny

At the edge of a spring well in Coan, County Kilkenny, a low crescent of scorched stone and charcoal sits quietly in the ground.

It is easy to miss, and most people do. But the shape of it, that distinctive horseshoe curve roughly ten metres long and eight metres wide, marks it out as something archaeologists have spent decades trying to fully understand: a fulacht fia.

Fulachtaí fia are among the most common prehistoric monuments in Ireland, found in their thousands across the island, yet their precise purpose remains debated. The most widely accepted theory holds that they were cooking sites: a trough would be dug into the ground near a water source, lined to hold liquid, and then filled using heated stones pulled from a nearby fire. The stones crack and blacken with repeated use, and it is exactly this accumulation of shattered, fire-reddened rock and charcoal that gives a fulacht fia its characteristic dark mound. The proximity of the Coan example to a spring well fits this pattern closely; water supply was evidently a practical consideration for whoever built and used it. The site was recorded by Prendergast in 1977, though the monument itself dates, in all likelihood, to the Bronze Age, a period spanning roughly 2500 to 500 BC when these features were most commonly constructed across Ireland.
