Burial Grounds

Grave Yard, Kilbarry, Co. Waterford

At the western edge of a broad marshy basin in County Waterford, a graveyard sits in a position that feels deliberately chosen, positioned where dry ground gives way to wetland, the kind of liminal boundary that early Christian communities in Ireland often favoured for their sacred enclosures. The site takes its name from St Barry, and the irregularly shaped enclosure around his church reflects the organic, pre-planned quality of early ecclesiastical settlements across the country.

The graveyard is subrectangular in plan, meaning it follows a roughly rectangular outline but with the organic variation typical of early medieval enclosures, which were rarely laid out with geometric precision. It measures approximately 36 metres on its north-west to south-east axis, with its width shifting from around 19 metres at the north-west end to 30 metres at the south-east, suggesting the boundary wall followed the contours of the available ground rather than any strict geometric ideal. That boundary wall still stands to an internal height of around two metres, a substantial masonry barrier that separates the sacred interior from the marshy terrain beyond. The church dedicated to St Barry sits within this enclosure, the whole arrangement preserving something of the logic of an early Irish ecclesiastical settlement, where the enclosing wall, sometimes called a cashel when built in stone, was as theologically significant as the building it protected.
