Burial Grounds
A graveyard that wraps around the walls of a Roman Catholic church is not unusual in Ireland, but the one at Carrigleigh, on the northern edge of Inchigeelagh in County Cork, merits a closer look for what it quietly preserves.
Its headstones span the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, a relatively compact and legible record compared to older burial grounds where inscriptions have long since weathered to nothing or where grave markers were never cut stone at all. Here, the inscriptions remain readable, which makes the graveyard a documentary resource as much as a sacred one, a place where family names, dates, and the particular conventions of memorial lettering from two distinct centuries sit side by side.
