Hut site, An Baile Uachtarach Theas, Co. Kerry

Tucked into the eastern corner of a garden in the village of Ballyoughteragh on the Dingle Peninsula, a small stone hut survives in a state of near-complete preservation, its corbelled roof still sealed by a single capstone some three metres above the interior floor.

What makes it quietly odd is the combination of sophistication and mystery: the structure is circular on the inside but D-shaped on the outside, with a flat northern wall containing the lintelled doorway, and three neat wall cupboards set into the interior, each with its own lintel. Two beam holes of uncertain purpose add to the sense that this building had a very specific, now-forgotten function.

Corbelling is an ancient building technique in which successive courses of stone are laid so that each projects slightly inward over the one below, eventually meeting at the top without the need for mortar or timber framing. It is a method used in early medieval Irish clochán, the beehive cells associated with monastic settlements, several of which survive elsewhere on the Dingle Peninsula. This hut, however, is considered probably recent in origin, which places it in an interesting category: a structure that looks archaic and uses genuinely ancient methods, but was most likely built in the post-medieval period. Its dimensions are modest, just 3.5 metres in internal diameter, with walls rising almost vertically to 1.55 metres inside and 2 metres outside before the corbelled roof takes over. The archaeological survey of the Corca Dhuibhne area, published by J. Cuppage in 1986, recorded it as entry number 1156, noting also a probable window opening that has since broken away on the exterior face.
