Hut site, Baile An Bhúlaeraigh Thuaidh, Co. Kerry

On a gently sloping patch of pastureland in north Baile An Bhúlaeraigh, about a hundred metres from the Garfinny river, a small circular structure sits in the Kerry landscape doing its best to go unnoticed.

What makes it unusual is not its size, which is modest, measuring roughly four metres in diameter and standing to about 1.6 metres in height, but rather what is built into its very walls. Tucked within the thickness of the northern wall is a souterrain, an underground or semi-underground passage typically associated with early medieval settlement and thought to have served for storage, refuge, or concealment. This one runs 3.2 metres in length, about a metre wide and 0.7 metres high, which is to say just large enough to crawl through, and was originally accessed via a lintelled opening into the clochán itself, though that opening is now blocked.

The structure is a clochán, a type of dry-stone corbelled hut found across the Dingle Peninsula and associated with early Christian and early medieval occupation in Ireland. What distinguishes this example is the integration of the souterrain directly into the wall fabric rather than as a separate underground feature, an arrangement that speaks to careful, purposeful construction. The wall itself is substantial, between 1.4 and 2 metres thick, which partly explains how a passage of those dimensions could be accommodated within it. The site was documented by J. Cuppage in the 1986 Corca Dhuibhne archaeological survey of the Dingle Peninsula, a landmark regional study that catalogued the extraordinary density of early remains across this part of County Kerry.
