Hut site, Formaoil, Co. Kerry

On a north-facing slope of pasture at Formaoil in County Kerry, a low, roughly circular mound sits unmarked on Ordnance Survey maps.

Locally, the spot is known as a children's burial ground, a designation that places it within a widespread Irish tradition of cillíní, informal burial grounds used for unbaptised infants and others excluded from consecrated earth. That association is poignant enough on its own. What makes this particular site unusual is that archaeology suggests something older and altogether different underneath the memory.

The feature measures 6.7 metres north to south and 6.3 metres east to west, rising only about a quarter of a metre above the surrounding ground. Its edge is defined by a number of large slabs set upright, and its subcircular shape points to an origin as a circular hut, the kind of simple stone-walled structure found across early medieval and prehistoric Ireland. A circular hut of this sort would typically have had low drystone walls, perhaps with a timber or turf roof, and would have served as a dwelling or an agricultural outbuilding. Over centuries, abandoned structures of this kind were sometimes repurposed by local communities as informal burial grounds, the raised, bounded nature of the ground lending it a sense of enclosure and separation that suited the purpose. The survey work of A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan, published in their 1996 archaeological study of the Iveragh Peninsula, brought the site its formal classification, though the local name had preserved a different kind of knowledge all along.
