Settlement Sites
In the townland of Inchincummer, in County Kerry, there are the remains of a hut site, a term that covers a broad range of ancient or early medieval stone or earthwork shelters, from simple seasonal enclosures used by farmers or herdsmen to more permanent domestic structures whose occupants have long since been forgotten.
Kerry is dense with such remains, the landscape having been continuously worked and settled across millennia, and individual sites can be easy to overlook, absorbed into field boundaries or bracken-covered hillsides without any obvious marker to draw the eye.
