At the heart of the midlands, Laois, once Queen’s County, was the territory of the O’More clan, who defended it fiercely against English settlement. Their great stronghold, the Rock of Dunamase, still crowns a limestone outcrop in ruins, while the Slieve Bloom Mountains rise gently to the north.
