Woodbrook House, Coolnavarnoge and Coolaghy, Co. Laois

A five-bay facade of this proportion, two storeys of cut ashlar or rendered symmetry with a lower two-storey return tucked behind it, is a shape that recurs across the Irish countryside from the early nineteenth century, and Woodbrook House is a clear example of the type.

Built around 1820, it belongs to the last confident phase of Georgian domestic building before architectural fashion turned toward the picturesque irregularity of the Victorian era. The house presents a plain, disciplined front to the approach, five window bays wide across two storeys, while the working spaces, kitchens, stores, and service rooms typically housed in such returns, step down in height at the rear, out of sight of visitors arriving at the main door.

The late-Georgian country house of this kind was built to a formula understood by masons and gentry alike: a rectangular block, evenly spaced windows, a doorcase marking the centre bay, and proportions calculated to read as calm and orderly from a distance. The rear return, lower and often less finished, was where the household's daily labour happened, and its two-storey height at Woodbrook suggests a reasonably substantial establishment rather than a modest farmhouse with pretensions. Houses of this scale, dating to around 1820, sit at the tail end of a building boom driven by improving landlords and a settled, if unequal, agrarian economy in the decades before the Great Famine reshaped the Irish countryside and the fortunes of many such families.
