Megalithic Tombs

Megalithic structure, Gorteendarragh, Co. Leitrim

On a north-east-facing slope in County Leitrim, a low mound of earth and stone sits with three upright stones jutting from it at deliberate-seeming angles.

The mound itself, roughly twelve metres across and rising between one and a half and three metres, may actually be natural, which is part of what makes this site so quietly puzzling. The largest of the three stones, measuring 2.2 metres long and 1.3 metres high, is oriented east to west. A second, smaller stone immediately to its south runs north to south, and a third stone of similar modest dimensions stands about five metres further south, also aligned north to south. Whether the mound was built or simply pressed into service, the arrangement of the stones suggests human intention, though what exactly was intended remains open.

The site was recorded by de Valera and Ó Nualláin in 1972, scholars whose systematic survey of Irish megalithic monuments catalogued many such ambiguous structures across the country. Megalithic simply means built from large stones, and the term covers a broad range of prehistoric construction types, from elaborate passage tombs to simpler arrangements whose original purpose is no longer legible. What lends this particular spot additional interest is its proximity to a wedge tomb situated around thirty metres to the south. Wedge tombs are a type of prehistoric burial monument, typically a roofed stone chamber that narrows toward one end, and they are found in reasonable numbers across the west and north of Ireland. Whether the two structures at Gorteendarragh were contemporary, or whether one preceded the other by centuries, is not recorded. Their closeness on the same hillside is suggestive, though of what, precisely, is left to the landscape itself.
