Altars, Boheh, Co. Mayo

At Boheh, on the southern slopes of Croagh Patrick in County Mayo, there is a large decorated rock known locally as St Patrick's Chair.

The boulder is covered in cup-and-ring marks, those circular carved depressions surrounded by concentric rings that are characteristic of Neolithic and Bronze Age rock art across the Atlantic fringes of Europe. What makes this particular stone remarkable, however, is not simply its carvings but a solar alignment observed here in spring and autumn. On certain evenings around late April and mid-August, the setting sun appears to roll down the northern ridge of Croagh Patrick when viewed from the rock, a phenomenon sometimes called the "Rolling Sun" event. It is the kind of coincidence, if coincidence it is, that raises quiet questions about how deliberately prehistoric people oriented their sacred or ceremonial places in the landscape.

The Boheh Stone, as it is also known, sits within a wider sacred geography that converges on Croagh Patrick itself, the mountain associated with St Patrick's fifth-century vigil and still the destination of a major annual pilgrimage. The carved rock almost certainly predates that Christian association by several thousand years. Cup-and-ring marks of this kind are generally attributed to the Neolithic or Early Bronze Age, roughly 4,000 to 1,500 BC, though their precise purpose remains a matter of debate among archaeologists. The alignment with the mountain's ridgeline suggests the site may have functioned as a place of astronomical or seasonal observation, perhaps marking the beginning of summer or the approach of harvest. The local placename element "Boheh" is thought to derive from the Irish, and the area retains a density of early monuments that points to long and layered human activity across the landscape.
