At Patrickswell in County Tipperary, the natural spring dedicated to St. Patrick does what such sites usually do, collecting clear water within a stone-walled enclosure and drawing a quiet reverence from those who visit. What makes this particular site quietly anomalous, though, lies in how the water leaves rather than how it arrives. The spring channels out through two narrow stone-cut openings that appear to have had a previous life entirely, identified as reused flumes from an early mill once associated with the site.

Flumes, in the context of early milling, are the cut channels that directed water from a source to drive a millwheel. Their reappearance here, redirected and repurposed into a devotional setting, points to an older industrial landscape folded into the sacred one. The well sits just over twenty metres north of St. Patrick's Church, and the water, once it passes through those narrow channels, feeds into a large pond before running off to form a river. Renovation work carried out in the 1950s and 1960s gave the enclosure much of its current form, according to Shee and Watson writing in 1975, and the presence of the early mill nearby is documented by Manning. The layering here, mill, well, church, modern repair, compressed into a single modest feature, is the kind of accumulation that repays slow attention.
