Armorial plaque, Timolin, Co. Kildare

Set into the west-facing wall of an ordinary house in the small County Kildare village of Timolin is a limestone slab no larger than a floor tile, yet it carries a coat of arms and a Latin inscription that has been there since 1630. The slab measures roughly 0.4 metres square, modest enough to pass unnoticed by anyone not looking for it, which is perhaps why it has attracted so little wider attention in the centuries since it was placed there.

The arms carved on the stone belong to the Archbold family, a Hiberno-Norman dynasty with deep roots in Leinster. Beneath or alongside the heraldry runs the inscription 'BEATUS QUI TELLIGIT SVP EGENVM ET PAVPERE', a garbled but recognisable rendering of a verse from the Psalms, meaning roughly 'Blessed is he who considers the poor and the needy', followed by the date 1630. The misspelling, with 'telligit' standing in for 'intelligit', is the kind of small imperfection that makes a carved inscription feel genuinely old rather than merely antique. Whether the slab originally marked a charitable act, a building project, or simply a statement of family piety is not recorded, but the Archbolds were prominent enough in the area for the gesture to have carried local weight. The Journal of the Kildare Archaeological Society noted the plaque in both its 1893 and 1899 volumes, suggesting it was already considered a curiosity worth documenting even then.
