Athboy Railway Station, Athboy, Co. Meath

What sets this one apart is how much of the original railway fabric survives around it: a station master's house, a segmental carriage arch built into the stonework, and even the limestone kerbing that once marked the edge of the platform. Walk the site and the layout of a working Victorian station is still legible beneath the current use.

The station dates from around 1863, part of the wave of branch line construction that reached into the Irish midlands during the nineteenth century. It was built as a detached five-bay single-storey structure, paired with a four-bay two-storey station master's house that was later extended to the north. The materials chosen for both buildings were evidently meant to impress as well as endure: snecked stone walls, meaning roughly coursed rubble laid with smaller stones packed into the gaps, are set off with dressings of ashlar limestone and red brick, while the roof is pitched slate with brick chimneystacks rising above it. Timber sash windows sit alongside cast-iron ones, all resting on stone sills, giving the group a slightly mixed, practical character rather than a uniform architectural statement. Taken together, the red brick, grey limestone and painted timber produce a genuinely colourful ensemble, one that would have been immediately recognisable to nineteenth century travellers as railway architecture even before they read a sign.

The carriage arch built into the stonework is worth looking for specifically. Such arches allowed horse-drawn carriages or carts to pass through the station building itself, usually to reach a platform or goods area on the other side, and their survival intact within a building now used for veterinary purposes is an unusual bit of continuity. The limestone kerbing tracing the former platform is easy to miss if you are not looking for it, since nothing marks it out from the rest of the ground, but it is one of the few remaining physical clues to where passengers would once have stood waiting for a train.
