Aughrim Mills, Aughrim, Co. Wicklow

A mill that jumps from three storeys to six and a half within the same run of buildings is not something you see often, and that uneven skyline is the first clue that this complex grew in stages rather than to a single plan.

Three main blocks sit end to end in a line, with a smaller two-storey gabled addition tacked on at the east end and another modest two-storey extension, part-clad in corrugated asbestos, at the west. The walls are granite rubble, laid in places at random and in places in neater coursed rows, and the windows keep their original one-over-one timber sashes in flat-headed openings, the same plain form repeated in the timber-sheeted doors. A pitched, natural slate roof with bracketed eaves and cast-iron rainwater goods finishes the composition, though the building now stands empty and exposed to the weather.

The mill dates from around 1870 and was built on the north-east side of the point where the Aughrim River meets a small, unnamed tributary, a siting that made sense for a mill needing a reliable water supply and drainage. Its industrial ambitions went beyond water power, though: the complex was linked by a small branch line to the Shillelagh line of the Dublin & South East Railway, meaning grain or goods could move directly between the mill and the wider rail network rather than relying solely on road transport. That combination, water-driven milling married to rail access, marks it out as a substantial operation for a town the size of Aughrim, and the surviving scale of the buildings, awkward roofline and all, still carries the memory of that ambition even in its current derelict state.

As one of the more prominent pieces of the town's older building stock, its condition matters beyond the site itself; a structure of this size and history falling further into disrepair would be a genuine loss to the way Aughrim's industrial past is read on the ground.
